Brown, The Chic Alternative to Black

Everywhere you look, people are often wearing Black—especially in the winter months, and especially when it comes to outerwear. But what’s the deal with Black? Why is it such a widely accepted and desired colour? Is it because everyone’s wearing it, so we blend in rather than stand out? Or could it be that Black somehow symbolises a lack of confidence, as if we’re hiding behind it?

I could go on forever wondering about the popularity of Black. Funny enough, it's not even truly a colour—it’s simply the absence of light. And what’s even more interesting is that most people don’t actually benefit from wearing Black.

If you've had a colour analysis done, you’ll know that Black really only suits the Winter season (and sometimes, Bright Springs, as an exception). For the other seasons, Black can actually be too harsh. It doesn’t merge well with many other colours, which is why it works best for Winters, who can mix it with other contrasting shades seamlessly.

The Power of Brown: Elegant and Versatile

A darker Brown is a much better alternative for most seasons, particularly for those with warmer skin tones. Brown can be both warm (yellow-based) and cool (blue-based), and it comes in a variety of shades—from deep Coffee brown to rich Mahogany or soft Camel.

Brown is synonymous with elegance. It’s a chic, grounded colour that never feels frivolous. When you wear brown, you’re making a statement, but in a sophisticated, refined way. It’s a timeless, versatile shade that speaks to quiet confidence and elegance.

Fashion Is About Expression, Not Just Trends

Whether you're a trend lover, a fashion inspiration seeker, or someone who doesn’t pay much attention to the latest collections, fashion is always present. I personally love the fresh feeling that comes with a new season and a new collection. There's something exciting about a seasonal change—though admittedly, I can get a bit tired of my winter clothing before it’s quite time to make the full switch.

As someone who adores colour, I often find myself gravitating towards darker tones as the summer approaches. Maybe it’s because I’m always looking for contrast, or perhaps because I feel like my natural palette has more depth as the seasons shift. (Or maybe that’s just me!)

This past winter, we saw a lot of Burgundy and Brown tones in fashion, and I’m thrilled that these brown shades are continuing into Spring and Summer. There's nothing more elegant than a chic brown swimsuit, and Zara Home is doing it right this season with their beautiful brown beachwear. They always offer such stylish, effortless pieces that I just can’t resist and especially now they are really showing that Brown actually is the chic alternative to Black.

Brown, the Chic Alternative to Black

Embracing Brown—Even for a Lover of Colour

Now, you might think, “But these shades are too neutral for me. How can a lover of vibrant colour like myself appreciate brown?” Well, just because I love colour doesn’t mean I can’t embrace the understated elegance of brown. I can feel incredibly chic and sophisticated in these gorgeous shades.

This is a great reminder not to limit ourselves to just one style or palette. Fashion is about how we want to look and feel. We should stay open to the idea that our style can evolve, and we can express different sides of ourselves through our wardrobes.

The Power of Colour—And Intention

So yes, colour holds power—and so does intention. It’s not about completely ditching Black (unless that’s your choice), or wearing Brown just because it’s “on trend.” It’s about expanding your view, tuning into what works for you, and letting your wardrobe reflect the many moods, seasons, and sides of who you are.

Brown is a prime example of this: understated yet impactful, earthy yet elevated. Whether it’s a luxurious wool coat, a crisp cotton shirt, or a chic swimsuit, Brown can be just as versatile—and often more flattering—than its overused cousin, Black.

Next time you reach for Black out of habit, pause for a moment. Ask yourself: Is this really what I want to wear today—or is it simply what I’m used to?

When you start exploring colours that truly complement you, everything changes. Your wardrobe becomes more intentional, your outfits feel more expressive, and getting dressed becomes a source of joy.

And that’s what style is all about, right? Feeling aligned, empowered, and fully you—whatever shade you’re wearing.
